Free Low Tech Worksite Accommodations Webinar – June 24, 10 a.m.

 

The Mississippi Partnerships for Employment for Youth and Young Adults with Developmental Disabilities (MSPE) project is sponsoring Low Tech Worksite Accommodations Webinar free of charge on Tues., June 24, from 10 to 11 a.m., Central Time. Presented by Dr. Therese Willkomm, this webinar provides an overview of worksite accommodations for people with disabilities that can be inexpensive, easy to create and completed in less than five minutes for less than $5 in cost. A variety of worksite accommodations and technology will be discussed, including adaptations using corrugated plastics and other materials as well as using the iPad. 1) Mississippi disAbility MegaConference – June 12-13, Jackson

 

The Mississippi disAbility MegaConference, Mississippi's largest conference for individuals with disabilities, their families, and professionals, will be held Thurs., June 12, and Fri., June 13, at the Marriott Downtown in Jackson. Presentation topics for 2014 include:  self-advocacy, disability policy, assistive technology/Bluetooth, Social Security Disability Work Incentives, community resources, abuse, employment, parent advocacy, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, Medicaid, housing, EEOC/ADA, special education, inclusive child care, crisis intervention and systems change. Approximately 50 businesses, service agencies and disability organizations will share their latest programs, information and innovations.  Continuing Education Units are offered in several disciplines. The closing keynote will be presented by Andy Imparato, executive director of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities. Stipends, if needed, for individuals with disabilities are provided by the Mississippi Council on Developmental Disabilities. 3) MSPE Policy Brief Now Available

 

Mississippians with disabilities have a significantly lower percentage of employment compared to people without disabilities. In fact, people with disabilities are not being utilized in Mississippi’s workforce. The newly released Mississippi Partnerships for Employment for Youth and Young Adults with Developmental Disabilities (MSPE) policy brief presents employment facts about people with disabilities in Mississippi and examines the ways employers can benefits from hiring youth and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our state. The policy brief also shares recommendations to be considered for hiring employees with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 4) Youth to Work Coalition Resources and Free Webinars

 

The National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center (NSTTAC) , in partnership with other organizations focused on employment of youth and young adults with disabilities, has launched a newly reorganized Youth to Work Coalition (YTWC) website. This website houses resources for work-based learning experiences for youth with disabilities.  The resources are organized across eight work-based learning experience categories: (1) career exploration, (2) job shadowing, (3) job sampling, (4) service learning, (5) internships, (6) apprenticeships, (7) paid employment, and (8) mentoring.  Within each work-based learning experience category, resources are organized for the following audiences (1) schools, (2) businesses, (3) youth service professionals, (4) families, and (5) youth with disabilities. Although the three-part series started on May 6, two sessions will be held in June:

 

Tues., June 10, 1 p.m. Central Time, Work Based Learning Experiences and the Individualized Learning Plans (ILP) (Mindy Larson, NCWD-Youth)

 

Tues., June 24th, 1 p.m. Central Time, Work Based Learning and Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): An in-depth training on the federal guidelines that must be used to established the understandings between employer, school, family and student. (Judy Imperatore, Consultant)
